Today's dilemma

OK, so if I get the Nikon D80 with the wide-angle lens and the telephoto lens and the strobe and the purchase protection plan I'm going to be out around $1800 bucks. I've saved close to a grand and have major checks arriving next week from my final month of The Most Lucrative Freelance Assignment Ever. But do I really want to spend $1800 when I have a film camera that works perfectly well?

This is my dilemma. Hubby bought a new Nikon digital point and shoot (it's so cute!) last week so there IS a new camera in the house, and it cost about 10% of what I'm looking to spend on the NIkon D80, and it's quite fun.

In the meanwhile, I'm itching for an electric guitar, which would also be an investment to improve my daily Music Time with baby — and considering I already have an amp and microphone and mik stand, wouldn't cost me as much on the back end.

OR, do I channel BeckyJSacto and blow it all on shoes?

  1. I have the D70. It's a great camera, and it's really nice to have something to take good pictures with, especially for capturing cute moments of my son. Since you actually know how to use a camera–more than zooming, pointing, and shooting–it would probably be a great investment for you.
The downside–it's so freaking huge that I don't tend to take it with me when I go out, or get it out when I do, particularly if there's a chance I'll have to go running after my boy. So, you'll still need Monstro's camera.
Still $1800 is a lot of money…so I can't blame you for making do with an adequate but less interesting make.

  2. I don't know that the D70 will work with my fabulous 300/2.8 lens, and I also LOVE that the D80 is 10.2 megapixels.
I did, however, call our local music store and inquire about electric-guitar rentals, which they offer for an extremely reasonable rate, so if the Nor'easter isn't too heinous tomorrow I'm gonna go rent me an electric guitar (and use it to finish the melodies of my musical already). Whoot!

  3. Hey Motormouth. I couldn't resist reading (some of)your blog once I became aware of it. Re: the camera — I've been looking for one too, and it seems that the Nikon D40x, which is the new D40 with 10 megapixels, is considerably less expensive than the D80, lighter weight, and has gotten very good reviews http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond40x/ and also consumer reviews, though I can't remember if it was at that site or another.
I hope your photography hobby won't take you too far away from your funny plays…..

  4. Hey Ms. B, I've looked at the D40 and it's great — its small footprint and less-than-a-pound weight are most impressive — but, it isn't compatible with my 300/2.8 Nikon non-digital lens, so that took it off the table for me. If I didn't have this beautiful lens to deal with, I would snap up a D40 in a heartbeat. Thanks for commenting and stop by again! -MM
